Implementing the requirements detailed in this procedure, the residential home ensures the recognition that hand hygiene (hand washing) is critical in the prevention of healthcare-associated infection by reducing the incidence of cross-infection. The residential home promotes high standards of hand hygiene among residents, staff and visitors (HIQA, 2016).

This policy was recently updated to incorporate ‘Infection Control Guiding Principles for Buildings Acute Hospitals and Community Settings Version 7 July 20th 2023’
