Implementing the requirements detailed in this procedure, the residential home ensures the recognition that hand hygiene (hand washing) is critical in the prevention of healthcare-associated infection by reducing the incidence of cross-infection. The residential home promotes high standards of hand hygiene among residents, staff and visitors (HIQA, 2016).

This policy has been updated to incorporate HIQA (2018) National Standards for infection prevention and control in community
services.

There has recently been minor updates to incorporate the HSE and Health Protection Surveillance Centre (2020), Interim Infection Prevention and Control Precautions for Possible Confirmed 2019 novel Coronovirus (2019 nCoV), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronovirus (MERS-CoV) and Avian Influenza A in Healthcare Settings
